The authors consider the existence of positive solutions of the second order boundary value problem \[ (\phi(u'))' + f(t, u, u') = 0\text{ for } t \in (0, T) \] with solutions satisfying Dirichlet conditions \(u(0) = u(T) = 0.\) The function \(f(t, x, y)\) is allowed to have strong singularities at \(t = 0\) or \(t = T\) and at \(x = 0\) and \(y = 0\). Using a modified upper and lower solution method, the authors establish sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions. They end the paper with an example.
