In order to develop a mathematically rigorous, constructive theory of scalar characteristic equations in the radiation transport theory, the author investigates the solvability of these equations assuming that they are Fredholm integral equations. The construction of the analytic solutions of the integral equations is reduced to solving infinite tridiagonal systems of linear algebraic equations. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of scalar characteristic equations and infinite systems of algebraic equations are established and the analytic properties of the solutions are studied in order to prove the applicability of the truncation method.
