This paper deals mainly with the following subjects: 1) to establish the structure of the finite groups \(G\) satisfying \(T(G)/(\text{order}(G))>k\); here \(k\) is a prescribed integer, and \(T(G)\) stands for the sum of the degrees of the irreducible complex characters of \(G\), i.e. \(T(G)=\sum_{\chi\in\text{Irr}(G)}\chi(1)\); 2) connections of the number \(T(G)\) with the number of conjugacy class of \(G\), with the number of elements of \(G\) of orders dividing 2. -- As to the results obtained, one is referred here to the paper. In Lemma 5.1 Hall's concept of isoclinism plays a rôle. The authors say, they don't know a reference for it in the literature. However, there is such a one! Concerning it and other comments on the application of isoclinism, the following is worthwhile to mention in relation to the paper under review: Lemma 5.1 was treated in full by \textit{J. C. Bioch} [in Nederl. Akad. Wet., Proc., Ser. A 79, 400-407 (1976; Zbl 0363.20011), Section 2 on pages 404 and 405]. It is attributed by Bioch to Hall's paper from 1940; see Bioch's paper for more information. Another way of obtaining Lemma 5.1 is by means of results of Heksler, Bioch and the reviewer dealing with representation theory of the always existing situation \(\overline GZ(X)=X=\overline HZ(X)\), whenever \(\overline G\cong G\), \(\overline H\cong H\), where \(G\) and \(H\) are given isoclinic finite groups; \(X\) is a finite isoclinic group to \(G\) and to \(H\) constructed from \(G\) and \(H\). One now may apply standard results from Clifford theory on induction and restriction of group characters together with theorems of Roth for the situation \(\overline G\trianglelefteq X\), \(\overline H\trianglelefteq X\), \(X/\overline G\) Abelian, \(X/\overline H\) Abelian. There is much more to say on recent results on isoclinism in connection to the paper under review. See the reviewer's paper [Indag. Math., New Ser. 15, No. 4, 595-600 (2004; Zbl 1113.20033)], especially the list of references in that paper, too. One of the results from the paper under review, namely on page 2460, is attributed to \textit{P. Lescot} [J. Algebra 177, No. 3, 847-869 (1995; Zbl 0841.20026)]. That result, however, is to be found already in \textit{J. Tappe} [Math. Z. 148, 147-153 (1976; Zbl 0312.20017)].
