This paper studies the variation behaviour of Kähler-Einstein metrics on bounded pseudoconvex domains. Let \(\pi: \mathbb{C}^{n}\times \mathbb{C}^{m} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}^{m}\), \(\pi(z,s)=s\), be the projection on the second factor, and let \(D\) be a smooth domain in \(\mathbb{C}^{n}\times \mathbb{C}^{m}\). Assume that for any \(s\in \pi(D)\), the slice \(D_{s}=\pi^{-1}(s)\cap D\) is a bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain with smooth boundary. A theorem due to \textit{S.-Y. Cheng} and \textit{S.-T. Yau} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 33, 507--544 (1980; Zbl 0506.53031)] shows the existence of complete Kähler-Einstein metrics of negative Ricci curvature on each \(D_{s}\), i.e., there is a unique complete Kähler-Einstein metric \(\omega_{s}=-\frac{\sqrt{-1}}{2}\sum h_{\alpha\bar{\beta}}(z,s)dz_{\alpha}\wedge d\bar{z}_{\beta}\) such that \[ \text{Ric}_{\alpha\bar{\beta}}= -\frac{\partial^{2}}{\partial z_{\alpha}\overline{\partial z_{\beta}} }\log \det (h_{\gamma\bar{\delta}}(z,s))=-(n+1)h_{\alpha\bar{\beta}}(z,s). \] If we denote \[ h(z,s)=\frac{1}{n+1}\log \det (h_{\gamma\bar{\delta}}(z,s)), \] then the restriction of \(h(z,s)\) on \(D_{s}\) is the potential function of \(\omega_{s}\), and \(h(z,s)\) depends smoothly on \(s\). The main theorem of this paper asserts that if \(n\geq 3\) and \(D\) is (strongly) pseudoconvex, then \(h(z,s)\) is a (strictly) plurisubharmonic function on \(D\). In the proof, the notion called geodesic curvature is used. This theorem is a generalization of the result in [\textit{G. Schumacher}, Invent. Math. 190, No. 1, 1--56 (2012; Zbl 1258.32005)] for canonical polarized manifolds to the noncompact case.
