The paper under review concerns the study of variation of Hodge structures (VHS) of Calabi-Yau (CY) type over Hermitian symmetric domains. As the background, the work of \textit{R. Friedman} and \textit{R. Laza} [Duke Math. J. 162, No. 12, 2077--2148 (2013; Zbl 1435.14011)] classifies \(\mathbb R-\)VHS of CY type on Hermitian symmetric domains: they are all obtained from a canonical VHS (constructed by Gross in tube case and related to the one constructed by Sheng and Zuo in non-tube case) by taking the unique CY irreducible factor of some twisted symmetric product of the canonical one. However, it remains a challenge to realise such CY type VHS on a Hermitian symmetric domain geometrically, that is, as the result of some motivic operations of the VHS associated to a family of smooth projective complex varieties. Generalising some examples constructed by \textit{G. Lombardo} [Tohoku Math. J. (2) 53, No. 3, 453--466 (2001; Zbl 1081.14504)] and \textit{S. L. Cacciatori} and \textit{S. A. Filippini} [``The \(E^3/\mathbb Z_3\) orbifold, mirror symmetry, and Hodge structures of Calabi-Yau type'', \url{arXiv:1201.5057}], the author constructs geometrically the aforementioned canonical \(\mathbb Q-\)VHS of CY type on a product of Hermitian domains of type A, using abelian varieties with large endomorphism algebras (so-called generalized Weil type). More precisely, the main result says that for a given CM field \(E\) with \(E_0\) its totally real subfield and \(H=(A_{2n-1},\alpha_n)\times(A_{2n-1}, \alpha_{p_2})\times\cdots\times(A_{2n-1}, \alpha_{p_d})\) with \(p_i<n\) and \(p_i\) having the same parity with \(n\), there is a family of abelian varieties of generalized Weil type \(\pi: A\to H\) whose generic endomorphism algebra contains \(E\) and that \(R^n\pi_*\mathbb Q\) gives the Hermitian VHS of CY type with generic endomorphism algebra \(E_0\). For example, in the case that \(E=\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-r})\) is an imaginary quadratic field, the construction of the VHS of CY type over the Hermitian domain \(D:=(A_{2n-1}, \alpha_n)\) goes as follows: let \(G\) be a \(\mathbb Q-\)algebraic group such that \(G_{\mathbb R}=SU(n,n)\), then the Hodge representation of \(G\) gives rise to a \(\mathbb Q-\)VHS of weight 1 on \(D\) and thus a family of abelian varieties \(\pi: A\to D\) of Weil type (up to isogenies). Then \(R^n\pi_*\mathbb Q\) contains a sub-VHS of CY type, which is exactly the canonical one over \(D\).
