This paper generalizes \textit{E. Witten}'s proof of the positive mass conjecture [Commun. Math. Phys. 80, 381--402 (1981; Zbl 1051.83532)] to ``a smooth \(n\)-manifold (\(n\geq 3\)) endowed with a spin structure and a \(C^0\cap W^{1,n}_{-q}\) regular and asymptotically flat Riemannian metric'' with \(q\geq(n-2)/2\). Here, \(W^{1,n}_{-q}\) is a weighted Sobolev space (see p. 104 of the article). If the ``distributional scalar curvature'' of \(g\) is nonnegative, then so is its ``generalized ADM mass''. A uniqueness result is included. Earlier results on piecewise regular metrics are also recovered. A generalization of a result by \textit{M. Herzlich} [``Universal positive mass theorems'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1401.6009}] is also indicated.
