The paper continues the researches on generalized problems of best approximation, see \textit{O. L. Vinogradov} and \textit{V. V. Zhuk} [St. Petersbg. Math. J. 24, No. 5, 691--721 (2013; Zbl 1275.41016); translation from Algebra Anal. 24, No. 5, 1--43 (2012)]. On the space \(C\) of continuous \(2\pi\)-periodic functions endowed with the sup-norm \(\|\cdot\|\), consider a seminorm \(P\) which satisfies the conditions: (1) there is a constant \(M>0\) such that \(P(f)\leq M\| f\|\), \(f\in C\) and (2) \(P(f(\cdot+h))=P(f)\), \(f\in C\), \(h\in\mathbb{R}\). Let \(CP\) denote the space \(C\) with the seminorm \(P\). Let \(H_n\), \(n\in\mathbb{Z}_+\) be the set of trigonometric polynomials of order at most \(n\). For \(f\in CP\) define \(E_n(f)=\inf_{T\in H_n}P(f-T)\). Note that \(E_n\) is itself a seminorm satisfying conditions (1) and (2). For \(r,n\in\mathbb{Z}_+\), \(f\in CP\), \(h>0\) define \(\omega_{r,n}(f,h)=\sup_{|t|\leq h}E_n(\delta_t^r(f))\), \(\omega_{r}(f,h)=\sup_{|t|\leq h}P(\delta_t^r(f))\) where \(\delta_t^r(f,\cdot)\) is the centered finite difference of order \(r\) of \(f\) with step \(t\). Obviously we have \(\omega_{r,n}(f,h)\leq \omega_{r}(f,h)\), \(f\in CP\). The main result contains an estimate of the form \[ E_n(f)\leq D(\gamma,r)\omega_{r,n}\left(f,\frac{\gamma\pi}{n+1}\right),\;n\in\mathbb{N},\;r=2m,\;m\in\mathbb{N},\;f\in C, \] where \(\gamma>0\) is a constant which satisfies a certain condition. The coefficient \( D(\gamma,r)\) is explicitly given using the Favard constants and has a complicated form. From this general estimate the authors obtain, for instance, the estimates \(E_n(f)\leq 0.21998\omega_4\left(f\frac{\pi}{n+1}\right)\), or \(E_n(f)\leq 0.09084\omega_6\left(f\frac{\pi}{n+1}\right)\), which improve the corresponding estimates given in the paper mentioned above.
