The abstract states: ``We say that a knot \(k_1\) in the \(3\)-sphere \(1\)-dominates another \(k_2\) if there is a proper degree \(1\) map \(E(k_1) \rightarrow E(k_2)\) between their exteriors, and write \(k_1 \geq k_2\). When \(k_1 \geq k_2\) but \(k_1 \neq k_2\) we write \(k_1 > k_2\). One expects in the latter eventuality that \(k_1\) is more complicated. In this paper we produce various sorts of evidence to support this philosophy.'' In what follows, a few of the results of the paper are mentioned; the list of keywords gives an impression of what else is involved. \(1\)-domination \(k_1 \geq k_2\) is preserved under knot sum and respects genus, Gromov volume (monotonicity), the \(A\)-polynomial and the Alexander polynomial, the latter two in that the polynomial of \(k_2\) divides the polynomial of \(k_1\). Also, a satellite knot \(1\)-dominates its pattern. Conversely, in case of equality of knot genus and Gromov volume, \(1\)-domination implies equivalence of the knots in question if the ``greater'' knot has no companion of winding number zero (Theorem 1, rigidity). By Theorem 2, \(1\)-domination is respected when taking the double branched cover knots, and if those are equivalent then so are the original knots. Moreover, being a \(2\)-bridge or a Montesinos knot is preserved under \(1\)-domination. Finally, questions arising in the context of \(1\)-domination are discussed. In Proposition 2, the second \(k'_1\) should presumably be \(k'_2\).
