Fatou's classical interpolation theorem states that for any zero measure closed set \(E\) in the unit circle \(\mathbb T\) there exists a function \(\lambda_E(z)\) in the disk algebra (holomorphic in the unit disk \(\mathbb D\) and continuous in \(\overline{\mathbb D}\)) such that \(\lambda_E(z)=1\) for \(z\in E\) and \(|\lambda_E(z)|<1\) for \(z\in \mathbb T\setminus E\). The author shows that this implies the also classical, and apparently more general, Rudin-Carleson theorem: given any zero measure closed set \(E\) in \(\mathbb T\) and any \(f\in\mathcal C(E)\) there exists \(g\) in the disk algebra such that \(g=f\) on \(E\). The proof is elementary and is based on an iterate approximation of \(f_{|E|}\) by elements of the disk algebra which are bounded by \(\|f\|_E\).
