In this paper the authors explicitly describe a set of free generators of the affine $\mathcal{W}$-algebra of type $A$ associated with a nilpotent element whose Jordan blocks are all of the same size. In the special case of a principal nilpotent element (one Jordan block) this recovers the quantum Miura transformation in [\textit{V. A. Fateev} and \textit{S. L. Lukyanov}, ``The models of two-dimensional conformal quantum field theory with $Z_n$ symmetry'', Int. J. Mod. Phys. A 3, No. 2, 507--520 (1988; \url{doi:10.1142/S0217751X88000205})]. We recall that to a reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ over $\mathbb{C}$ and a nilpotent element $f$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ one can associate the \textit{affine $\mathcal{W}$-algebra $\mathcal{W}^k(\mathfrak{g},f)$ at level $k\in\mathbb{C}$}, defined by the generalised quantised Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction. Let $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{gl}_N$ where $N=nl$ and $f$ a nilpotent element with $n$ Jordan bocks of size $l$. The authors define certain $W_{i\,j}^{(r)}$, $i,j=1,\ldots,n$ and $r=1,\ldots,l$, as coefficients of the column determinant of a certain $(l\times l)$-matrix. These coefficients lie in $V^k(\mathfrak{b})$, the universal affine vertex algebra associated with a certain subalgebra $\mathfrak{b}$ of $\mathfrak{g}$. $V^k(\mathfrak{b})$ contains $\mathcal{W}^k(\mathfrak{g},f)$ as a vertex subalgebra. The main result states that $\mathcal{W}^k(\mathfrak{g},f)\subset V^k(\mathfrak{b})$ is freely generated by the $W_{i\,j}^{(r)}$. Moreover, the authors calculate the images of these generators under the quantum Miura transformation, an injective vertex algebra homomorphism $\mathcal{W}^k(\mathfrak{g},f)\to V^k(\mathfrak{l})$ induced by the projection $\mathfrak{b}\to\mathfrak{l}$ where $\mathfrak{l}$ is another subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$.
