    The paper studies the system of coupled FitzHugh-Rinzel equations of the form \[ \begin{aligned} & \dot x_i = x_i -x_i^3/3 - y_i +z_i + \varepsilon (w-x_i) + \sum_{j=1}^n \xi_{ij} x_j,\\ & \dot y_i = \gamma (x_i-by_i),\\ & \dot z_i = \mu (c-x_i-dz_i),\\ & \dot w = -h w + \varepsilon \sum_{j=1}^n (x_j-w), \quad i=1,\dots,n\end{aligned} \] with diffusive matrix \(G=\{\xi_{ij}\}\). The authors obtain conditions for the existence of an absorbing region, steady states and their stability. In particular, the phenomenon of amplitude death is observed for a small size network. The biological implications of the observed phenomenon are discussed.
