Let \(\mathcal{T}\) be a triangulated category with autoequivalence \(\Sigma\), let \(\Delta\) be the class of triangles of \(\mathcal{T}\) and \(\mathcal{C}\) an additive full subcategory of \(\mathcal{T}\). The authors develop a way to construct relative (co)resolutions in \(\mathcal{T}\) for one of the terms in a triangle relative to a proper class of triangles \(\xi \subset \Delta\) given resolutions of the other two terms [abstract]. This result has been done with the hypothesis that the triangulated category may not have enough \(\xi\)-projectives nor \(\xi\)-injectives, in contrast to [\textit{J. Asadollahi} and \textit{S. Salarian}, J. Algebra 281, No. 1, 264--286 (2004; Zbl 1060.18006)]. The construction is also generalized to construct a (co)resolution of the first term in finite exact complexes relative to \(\xi\) given those of the other terms in the complex. The authors also apply these results to the Gorenstein subcategory \(\mathcal{GC}(\xi)\) of \(\mathcal{T}\) and show that when \(\mathcal{C}\) is closed under countable coproducts then \(\mathcal{GC}^n(\xi)= \mathcal{GC}(\xi)\) for all \(n\geq 1\) and \(\mathcal{GC}(\xi)\) is closed under direct summands, where \(\mathcal{GC}^{n+1}(\xi)\) is defined as \(\mathcal{G}(\mathcal{GC}^n(\xi))\) [Theorem 3.3]. The homological algebra of \(\mathcal{GC}(\xi)\) is also studied when \(\mathcal{C}\) is the full subcategory of \(\xi\)-projectives or \(\xi\)-injectives.
