A dimonoid is an algebra \((S, \prec , \succ )\) with two binary associative operations which commute on \({S^2}\); they are closely related to left and right acts of semigroups as seen from a theorem proved here: For a semigroup \(S\) define on \(S \times S\) two operations \( \prec\), \(\succ \) by \((g,h) \prec (k,l): = (gk,hk)\) and \((g,h) \succ (k,l): = (gk,gl)\). Then \(\bar S = (S \times S, \prec , \succ )\) is a dimonoid and any dimonoid can be obtained this way. The authors obtain a similar characterization for dirings.
