The problem of existence of compact local models (Clifford-Klein forms) of homogeneous spaces \(G/H\) is investigated. A new cohomological obstruction to the existence of compact Clifford-Klein forms is proved in the case when \(G\) is a connected linear Lie group and \(H\) is a connected closed subgroup. A relation between the natural homomorphism from the relative Lie algebra cohomology to the de Rham cohomology with an upper-bound estimate for cohomological dimensions of discontinuous groups is used. A sufficient condition for applying this result to the reductive case is given. From this obstruction, a lot of examples are derived (some of them are new ones). Also a long list of homogeneous spaces \(G/H\) (where the Lie group \(G\) is a classical simple real Lie group), for which it is known whether there exist or do not exist compact Clifford-Klein models, is given.
