In this primarily survey paper, the authors discuss two well-known open problems concerning regularity for nonlinear conformally invariant elliptic systems in dimensions \(n\geq 3\): \(H\)-systems and \(n\)-harmonic maps into compact Riemannian manifolds. Some solutions of these problems are known in dimension \(n=2\), but these solutions break down in higher dimensions, except in very special cases, e.g. hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature or manifolds with symmetries. The authors discuss some solutions in the special cases and hint at the main difficulties involved in the general case. They also state some new results and they list some open questions of independent interest, whose answers would lead to solutions of the problems in question.
