In this paper the author investigates the inverse mean curvature flow (IMCF) of compact hypersurfaces with boundary in \(\mathbb{R}^{n+1}\), where the evolving hypersurface moves along, but keeps perpendicular to, a fixed hypersurface. He proves the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions of the IMCF with the above Neumann-type boundary condition via a level set approach, using ideas of \textit{G. Huisken} and \textit{T. Ilmanen} [J. Differ. Geom. 59, No. 3, 353--437 (2001; Zbl 1055.53052)] together with new barrier constructions and a priori estimates. When \(n=2\) he also obtains a monotone quantity for classical solutions, which is analogous to the Hawking mass for closed hypersurfaces.
