In what follows, all spaces are completely regular topological spaces. A \textit{network} for a space \(X\) is a family \(\mathcal{S}\) of subsets of \(X\) such that for any \(x \in X\) and for any neighbourhood \(U\) of \(x\) there is some \(P \in \mathcal{S}\) such that \(x \in P \subseteq U\). The \textit{network weight} of a space \(X\) (denoted by \(nw(X)\)) is the smallest cardinality of a network for \(X\). Of course one has \(nw(X) \leqslant w(X)\), where \(w(X)\) (the \textit{weight} of \(X\)) is the smallest cardinality of a base of open sets of \(X\). Let \(\mathcal{A}\) denote the class of all spaces \(X\) such that, for any closed subspace \(Y\) of \(X\), one has \(nw(Y) = w(Y)\). One of the main results of the paper under review asserts that the remainder \(bX \setminus X \in \mathcal{A}\) for any compactification of a paracompact \(p\)-space \(X\). It is also shown that the same is not true, in general, for Čech-complete spaces. A number of related results are also established.
