Let \(\mathfrak{g}\) be a reductive Lie algebra of rank \(\ell\) over an algebraically closed field \(\Bbbk\) of characteristic zero. Denote by \(G\) the adjoint group of \(\mathfrak{g}\). Fix Cartan and Borel subalgebras \(\mathfrak{h} \subset \mathfrak{b}\) of \(\mathfrak{g}\), and let \(B = N_G(\mathfrak{b})\) be the corresponding Borel subgroup of \(G\). Therefore one may consider the closure in the Grassmannian \(\mathrm{Gr}_\ell(\mathfrak{g})\) of the \(B\)-orbit containing \(\mathfrak{h}\), denoted as \(X\). The relevance of \(X\) can be partly explained from the fact that \(G \cdot X\) is closely related to the commuting variety of \(\mathfrak{g}\). See [\textit{R. W. Richardson}, Compos. Math. 38, 311--327 (1979; Zbl 0409.17006)] for further discussions. The main result of the paper under review is that \(X\) is a Gorenstein \(\Bbbk\)-variety with rational singularities. Several useful properties about singularities and dualizing modules are also collected in the appendices.
