The author examines a theory of stable equivalences of Morita type, defined by \textit{M. Broué} [NATO ASI Ser., Ser. C, Math. Phys. Sci. 424, 1-26 (1994; Zbl 0827.20007)]. Let \(R\) be a complete discrete valuation ring and let \(A\) and \(B\) be \(R\)-algebras which are projective of finite type as \(R\)-modules. The \(R\)-stable module category \(\overline{\text{Mod}}(A)\) is the category whose objects are \(A\)-modules and whose morphism sets are module homomorphisms modulo those factoring through modules induced from \(R\). An equivalence \(\overline{\text{Mod}}(A)\simeq\overline{\text{Mod}}(B)\) is said to be of Morita type if there are an \(A\otimes_RB^{\text{op}}\)-module \(N\) and a \(B\otimes_RA^{\text{op}}\)-module \(M\) both projective as \(A\) and as \(B\)-modules, such that \(N\otimes_BM\simeq A\oplus X\) and \(M\otimes_AN\simeq B\oplus Y\) for a projective \(A\otimes_RA^{\text{op}}\)-module \(X\) and a projective \(B\otimes_RB^{\text{op}}\)-module \(Y\). The author gives first properties of these equivalences, and of the module \(M\) in particular the fact that up to a projective bimodule the module \(M\) is indecomposable, for algebras reducing to selfinjective algebras modulo \(\text{rad }R\) and being separable modulo their radical. Then the author turns to the case where \(A\) and \(B\) are group algebras over \(R\) for \(p\)-groups \(P\) and \(Q\). Here he proves that any such \(M\) is the tensor product over \(R\) of an endotrivial module with a Morita bimodule. Assuming \(M\) and \(N\) being indecomposable, then the author proves that `conjugation' by \(M\) of certain restricted Morita auto-equivalences is again a Morita equivalence. The author applies this to describe the outer automorphism group of a block of a group ring with cyclic defect group. Finally let us remark that reference 2 is published [op. cit.], reference 11 is published as section 5 on page 721-749 of [CMS Conf. Proc. 18 (1996; Zbl 0855.16015)], reference 12 is published on page 512-523 [Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 212 (1995; Zbl 0865.20008)] and the word `universal' in Corollary 4.3 should be replaced by `serial'.
