Starting with a paper of \textit{W. Weil} [Isr. J. Math. 24, 352-367 (1976; Zbl 0337.52006)], several characterizations of zonoids or generalized zonoids by inequalities between mixed volumes (involving further convex bodies) have been found. Analogous results are known for intersection bodies and dual mixed volumes, and for polar projection bodies, where the characterization involves centroid bodies and dual mixed volumes. In the present paper, such results and more general ones, also for the generalized intersection bodies introduced here, are deduced from an abstract functional analytic principle concerning cones in a locally convex Hausdorff topological vector space \(X\). This result characterizes the elements of a convex cone in \(X\), or of its generated subspace, in terms of a dense subset of the dual space \(X'\) and the extreme points of a weakly compact base of the cone.
