The well-known connection between varieties and clones is generalized to the case of partial algebras. With this aim, notions of variety of partial algebras, terms and equations are introduced. Using these notions, it is proved that partial varieties are exactly those classes of partial algebras which are closed under forming filtered products, subalgebras and images of closed homomorphisms.
