One of the standard tools for the study of associative and alternative algebras is the Peirce decomposition. In this paper, the authors work in a certain class of general nonassociative algebras in which such techniques work. So, several well known facts of the alternative case remain true in alternative-nuclear algebras. A \(K\)-algebra \(U\), with \(K\) a commutative field, is said to be an \textsl{associative-nuclear algebra} (resp. \textsl{alternative-nuclear algebra}), if there exists an idempotent \(e\neq 0,1\), and every idempotent is in the associative (resp. alternative) nucleus of \(U\). The alternative nucleus of \(U\) is defined as the set of the elements \(r\in U\) such that \((x,r,x)=0\), and \((r,x,y)=(y,r,x)=(x,y,r)\), for any \(x,y\in U\), where \((\cdot,\cdot,\cdot)\) denotes the usual associator operator. In section two, it is shown that in a \(K\)-algebra \(U\) with a finite collection \(\{e_1,\dots ,e_n\}\) of orthogonal idempotents, the existence of a joint Peirce decomposition satisfying the usual relations of the associative (resp. alternative) case is equivalent to the inclusion of the idempotents in the associative (resp. alternative) nucleus. Moreover, if \(U\) is alternative-nuclear, then every Peirce subspace \(U_{ij}\) is contained in the alternative nucleus. In the following sections, this is the key for translating results of alternative algebras to the alternative-nuclear case. For instance, the nilradical of a finite-dimensional power-associative alternative-nuclear algebra is characterized as the set of the properly nilpotent elements. The last two sections are devoted to simple flexible algebras with an idempotent in the alternative nucleus. Several nice conditions for either the associativity or the alternativity of such algebras are obtained. A complete collection of examples and counterexamples is given.
