Some properties on the existence and positivity of the semigroup \(\bigl( T_ \varphi(t) \bigr)_{t \geq 0}\) associated with the operator \(A_ \varphi\) defined on the space \(E=L^ p \bigl( (-r,0),F \bigr)\), \(r>0\), \(1 \leq p<\infty\), \(F\) being a Banach space, are studied. The operator \(A_ \varphi\) is defined as follows: \[ A_ \varphi f=f',\;D(A_ \varphi) = \biggl\{ f \in W^{1,p} \bigl( (-r,0),F \bigr),\;f(0)=\varphi(f) \biggr\}, \] where \(\varphi\) is a bounded linear operator from \(E\) to \(F\). Existence and positivity of \(\bigl( T_ \varphi (t) \bigr)_{t \geq 0}\) are given under the assumption of the positivity of \(\varphi\). Moreover, \(\bigl( T_ \varphi(t) \bigr)_{t \geq 0}\) is eventually compact if \(\varphi\) is compact and some other assumptions are satisfied. The eventual compactness of \(\bigl( T_ \varphi (t) \bigr)_{t \geq 0}\) is proved also with some assumptions on \(\varphi\) that are more general than compactness. Spectral properties are also investigated. The results are used to describe the asymptotic behaviour of a mathematical model of population dynamics (a cell cycle model).
