Let \((\psi_{j,k})_{j,k\in\mathbb{Z}}\) be a Hilbert basis in \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R})\) of the form \(\psi_{j,k}(x)=2^{j/2}\psi(2^ jx-k)\) generated by some ``mother function'' \(\psi\). Let \(W_ j\) be a closed subspace in \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R})\) generated by \(\{\psi_{j,k}\}_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}\), \(V_ j=\oplus_{p<j}W_ j\). The main result: Given an arbitrary orthonormal basis of compactly supported Hölder functions \(\psi_{j,v}\), a sequence \(\{V_ j\}\) constitutes a multiresolution analysis in \(L^ 2(\mathbb{R})\) of Mallat- Daubechies type. There exists a compactly supported ``father function'' \(\varphi\in V_ 0\) with the same regularity as \(\psi\) and such that \(\{\varphi(x-k)\}_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}\) is an orthonormal basis in \(V_ 0\).
