The authors consider area-preserving maps of the following: \[ {x'\choose p'}={\cos \omega\quad\sin\omega\choose -\sin\omega\quad\cos \omega}{x+ f(x,p)\choose p+x^ 2+ g(x,p)},\tag{1} \] where \(f\), \(g\) are analytic functions whose expansions begin with terms of order not less than 3, \(\omega=\alpha+\varepsilon\), \({\alpha\over 2\pi}={p\over q}\) is rational, \(\varepsilon\) is a small parameter. The goal of the paper is to investigate the stability and geometry of the orbits near the origin. This is achieved with the help of the time- independent interpolating Hamiltonian of the normal form of the map (1). The asymptotic nature of the normalizing transformation and of the interpolating Hamiltonian is proved. Accordingly, the study of fixed points and nearby orbits of some truncations of the interpolating Hamiltonian leads to results which agree with known ones. In particular, the authors show that given a generic map, the origin is stable if \(q\geq 5\), can either be stable or unstable if \(q=4\), and is unstable if \(q=3\).
