The author investigates the splitting of the identity component \(G_ 0\) in a locally compact abelian (LCA) group \(G\). Among other things \(G_ 0\) splits in \(G\) if the torsion part of \(G/G_ 0\) is closed in \(G/G_ 0\). Finally all LCA groups \(G\) are characterized which are topological torsion groups modulo \(G_ 0\) and contain \(G_ 0\) as a direct summand.
