Let \(\Phi: \mathbb{R}_ +\to \mathbb{R}\) be a continuous ``radial basis function'' and denote the composite function \(\Phi\circ\|\cdot \|: \mathbb{R}^ s\to\mathbb{R}\) (where \(\|\cdot\|\) is the Euclidean norm) also by \(\Phi\). In this note the authors give sufficient conditions on \(\Phi\) that ensure that translates of \(\Phi\) along the multi-integers satisfy the local stability estimate \[ | d_ \ell|\leq C\sup_{x-\ell\in K}\left| \sum_{j\in\mathbb{Z}^ s} d_ j\Phi(x-j)\right|\text{ for all }\ell\in\mathbb{Z}^ s.\tag{1} \] Here, \(K\) is a compact neighbourhood about zero, \(C\) is a positive constant that does not depend on \(\ell\) or on the \(d_ j\) but does depend on \(K\), and the \(\{d_ j\}_{j\in \mathbb{Z}^ s}\) are required to be such that \[ \sum_{j\in\mathbb{Z}^ s} | d_ j\Phi(x-j)|<\infty\quad\text{for all }x\in\mathbb{R}^ s.\tag{2} \] Theorem. Suppose \(\Phi: \mathbb{R}_ +\to \mathbb{R}\) is not identically zero and has the form \[ \Phi(r)= \sum^{(m-1)/2}_{i=0} a_ \ell r^{m- 2\ell},\quad r\geq 0, \] where \(m\) is an odd positive integer. Let \(s\) be positive and odd then the stability estimate (1) holds.
