The Szász-Mirakyan operators formally associate with a function \(f\in C[0,\infty)\), the sums \(S_ n(f,x):= e^{-nx} \sum^ \infty_{k=0} f\Bigl({k\over n}\Bigr)(nx)^ k/k!\). Let \(\rho(x)\) be a continuous nonincreasing function such that \(0< \rho(x)\leq 1\), \(0\leq x<\infty\), and also \(\sup_{x\geq 0}\{\rho(x)/\rho(x+ \sqrt x)\}<\infty\); and set \(C_ \rho:= \{f\in C[0,\infty), \| f\|_ \rho:= \sup_{x\geq 0}|\rho(x) f(x)|<\infty\}\). Denote by \(\omega_ 2(f,\delta):= \sup_{0<h<\delta} \sup_{x\geq 0}| \rho(x+ 2h\sqrt x) \Delta^ 2_{h\sqrt x}(f,x)|\), the modulus of smoothness of \(f\). Finally, let \(p(t)\) be a continuous nondecreasing function on \([0,1]\) such that \(p(t)/t^ 2\leq Mp(\tau)/\tau^ 2\) for all \(0<\tau<t\). Then the paper is devoted to proving following theorem. For \(f\in C_ \rho\) the condition \(a\). \(\| S_ n(f)- f\|_ \rho= O(p(1/\sqrt n))\), as \(n\to\infty\) is equivalent to the following two conditions \(b_ 1\). \(\omega_ 2(f,\delta)= O(p(\delta))\), as \(\delta\to 0\), and \(b_ 2\). \(\rho(2\delta)\Delta^ 2_ \delta(f,0)= O(p(\sqrt \delta))\), as \(\delta\to 0\). It is shown that the last two conditions are in general independent. However, if \(\int^ h_ 0 p(t)/t dt= O(p(h))\), as \(h\to 0\), then \(b_ 2\) follows from \(b_ 1\) and is therefore redundant. This happens for instance, when \(p(t)= t^ \alpha\), \(0<\alpha\leq 2\).
