The generalized Bers projection \(\Phi\) from the space \(M(E)\) of Beltrami coefficients of \(E\) to the Banach space of bounded quadratic differentials \(B_ 2(D)\) is studied. Here \(D\) is any hyperbolic open set (not necessarily connected) on the extended complex plane and \(E\) denotes its complement. Sample theorems are: (1) If \(D\) is dense in \(\overline{{\mathbf C}}\) and has only finitely many components then \(\Phi\) is injective; (2) if \(D\) is conformally rigid then \(E\) has zero area; (3) for any Fuchsian group \(G\), the Bers-embedded Teichmüller space \(T(G)\) is the component containing the origin of the interior of the space of univalent functions having \(G\)-invariant Schwarzians. Result (2) is originally due to Overholt, and (3) was due to Zhuravlev (re-proved by Shiga). The author uses the \(\lambda\)-lemma to prove (3).
