Let \(S\) be a nonsingular projective surface defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, \(H\) an ample line bundle on \(S\) and \(E\) a locally free sheaf on \(S\) of rank 2. It is known that the following Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality holds: \(c^ 2_ 1(E) \leq 4(c_ 2(E))\) on \(X\). The author proves a generalized inequality of Bogomolov-Gieseker. In fact, let \(f:X \to S\) be a fiber space over a \(d\)-dimensional nonsingular projective variety with \(\dim f=r\) and \(\dim S \geq 2\). Let \(L\) be an \(f\)- ample Cartier divisor on \(X\), \(A\) a nef Cartier divisor on \(X\) and \(H\) a very ample divisor on \(S\). Assume the polarized fiber space \((X/S,L)\) is \(A\)-strongly \(H\)-semi-stable. Then one has the following inequality: \(r(c^ 2_ 1(X/S,L) \cdot H^{d-2}) \leq 2(r+1)(c_ 2(X/S,L) \cdot H^{d-2})\).
