    The following result is proved: Let \(K_ 1\), \(K_ 1'\), \(K_ 2\) and \(K_ 2'\) be hyperbolic knots such that \(K_ 1\sharp K_ 2\) is not equivalent to \(K_ 1'\sharp K_ 2'\) or \(-(K_ 1'\sharp K_ 2')\) (\(-K\) denotes the knot with opposite orientation). Then for all \(p\), \(q\) with \(q\neq 0\) the 3-manifold obtained by \({p\over q}\)-surgery on \(K_ 1\sharp K_ 2\) is not homeomorphic to the one obtained by \({p\over q}\)-surgery on \(K_ 1'\sharp K_ 2'\). Using known results about cables of connected sums [see e.g. \textit{J. H. Przytycki}, Can. J. Math. 41, No. 2, 250-273 (1989; Zbl 0667.57003)], the following conclusion is drawn: Let \(K\) be a non-reversible (\(-K\) is not equivalent to \(K\)) hyperbolic knot (e.g. \(8_{17}\)). Then for each integer \(n\), the \(n\)-surgery manifold on \(K\sharp K\) is not homeomorphic to the one on \(K\sharp(-K)\), but the Witten \(\text{sl}_ 2 (\mathbb{C})\)- invariants, as defined by \textit{R. Kirby} and \textit{P. Melvin} [Invent. Math. 105, No. 3, 473-545 (1991; Zbl 0745.57006)], coincide.
