The authors consider a family of hyperbolic compact surfaces \(S_ \ell\), \(\ell >0\), under some assumptions, with limiting surface \(S_ 0\) so that \(S_ 0\) is noncompact with finite volume. Then the Laplacian on \(S_ 0\) has a continuous spectrum, and the problem is to find the asymptotics of the counting function \(N_ \ell(x)\), as \(\ell\to 0\), for the eigenvalues \(\mu\) of \(S_ \ell\), lying in the interval \(1/4\leq\mu\leq 1/4+x^ 2\). The following result is proved: \[ N_ \ell(x)=\pi^{-1}2x \log 1/ \ell+0(1)\quad \text{as } 1\to 0. \]
