For a bounded set \(A\) of a Banach space \(X\), the Chebyshev self-radius of \(A\) is \(r(A)=\inf\{\sup \{\| x-y\|\); \(y\in A\}\); \(x\in\text{conv } A\}\). \(X\) is said to have normal structure if \(r(A)<\text{diam }A\) for every non-singleton bounded set in \(X\). Recall that Kuratowski's measure of non-compactness \(\alpha(A)\) of a set \(A\) in a Banach space \(X\) is the infimum of those \(\varepsilon>0\) for which \(A\) admits a finite cover by sets whose diameter is less than \(\varepsilon\). If \(B_ X\) denotes the unit ball of \(X\), \(X\) is said to have Rolewicz's property \((\beta)\) if for every \(\varepsilon>0\) there is \(\delta>0\) such that if \(1<\| x\|<1+\delta\), then \[ \alpha(\text{conv}(\{x\}\cup B_ X)\setminus B_ X)<\varepsilon. \] It is shown that \(X^*\) has normal structure if \(X\) has Rolewicz's property \((\beta)\). The interplay of these and other similar structures on Banach spaces is discussed. A nice paper.
