Let \(E\) be a Fréchet space, \(E^*\) the topological dual of \(E\); \(L_ n\in E^*\), \(n=1,2,\dots\), is said to be an interpolating sequence if for any scalar sequence \(A_ n\), \(n=1,2,\dots\) there exists \(f\in E\) such that \(L_ n(f)=A_ n\), \(n=1,2,\dots\;\). In this paper the author improves a result of \textit{P. M. Gauthier} and \textit{L. A. Rubel} [Can. J. Math. 27, 1110-1113 (1975; Zbl 0322.46006)] with the following result: Let \(E\) be a Fréchet space and \((L_ n)\) a sequence in \(E^*\) then \((L_ n)\) is interpolating if and only if it is a totally linearly independent sequence. Some applications are given for problems in complex functions theory. This result can be found also in [\textit{M. Valdivia}, Proc. R. Irish Acad., Sect. A 80, 173-189 (1980; Zbl 0451.46017)].
