Let \(K\) be a locally compact complete non-archimedean field with non- trivial valuation and \(B\) its unit ball. Let \((e_ n)_ n\) be a sequence in \(K[x]\) with \(\deg e_ n=n\). One wants to establish when such a sequence forms an orthonormal basis for the Banach space \(C\) \((B\to K)\). The answer is Theorem: \((e_ n)_ n\) is an orthonormal basis for \(C\) \((B\to K)\) if and only if the supremum norm \(\| e_ n\|_ S=1\) and the Gauss- norm \(\| e_ n\|_ G= |\text{coeff.} x^ n|\), \(n=1,2,\dots\;\). This theorem is the corrected version of an earlier result of \textit{M. Höderath} [Indagationes Math. 48, 37-45 (1986; Zbl 0592.12012)]. The author then generalizes the theorem to several variables. He also obtains generalizations of the classical Mahler basis for \(C\) (\(\mathbb{Z}_ p\to \mathbb{Q}_ p)\) and he obtains explicit formulas for the corresponding expansions of the continuous functions.
