    It is proposed to use the notation \({\partial u\over dx}\), \({\partial u\over dy}\), \({\partial v\over dx}\), \({\partial v\over dy}\) instead of the old customary notation \({\partial u\over \partial x}\), \({\partial u\over \partial y}\), \({\partial v\over \partial x}\), \({\partial v\over \partial y}\) for partial derivatives of the functions \(u=f(x,y)\) and \(v=g(x,y)\). Three shortcomings of the old notation are pointed out, especially that \({1\over\partial u/\partial x}\neq {\partial x\over\partial u}\). By distinguishing between the symbols for total and partial differentials according to the principle of Leibniz's notation a consistent algebra of differentials is produced.
