The existence and uniqueness of solutions to the following boundary value problem (BVP) are discussed: \[ x''(t)=f(t,Sx_ t,x'(t)), \qquad t\in [0,T], \quad x\in\mathbb{R}^ n, \tag{1} \] \[ \alpha_ 0 x(\theta)+\alpha_ 1 x'(0)= \varphi(\theta), \quad -r\leq\theta\leq 0, \quad \beta_ 0 x(T)+\beta_ 1 x'(T)=\delta, \quad \delta\in\mathbb{R}^ n, \tag{2} \] where \(x_ t:=x(t+\theta)\) for \(-r\leq\theta\leq 0\); \(f: [0,T]\times B\times \mathbb{R}^ n\to\mathbb{R}^ n\) is continuous; \(\varphi\in C_ r:= C([- r,0],\mathbb{R}^ n)\); \(S: C_ r\to B\) is a continuous operator; \(B\) may be equal to \(\mathbb{R}^ n\), \(C_ r\) or \(C([0,T],\mathbb{R}^ n)\), where \(C([a,b], \mathbb{R}^ n)\) be the Banach space of all continuous functions \(y: [a,b]\to\mathbb{R}^ n\) endowed with the sup-norm; \(\alpha_ i\) and \(\beta_ i\) \((i=1,2)\) are real constants satisfying \(|\alpha_ 0|+ | \alpha_ 1|>0\), \(|\beta_ 0 |+| \beta_ 1|>0\) and \(\alpha_ 0 \beta_ 0 T+\alpha_ 0 \beta_ 1- \beta_ 0 \alpha_ 1\neq 0\). By using the contraction mapping principle and the Green's function of the BVP: \(x''(t)=0\), \(0\leq t\leq T\), with \(\alpha_ 0 x(0)+ \alpha_ 1 x(0)=0\) and \(\beta_ 0 x(T)+ \beta_ 1 x'(T)=0\), sufficient conditions are obtained in Theorem 1 for the existence and uniqueness of the BVP (1)--(2). In Theorem 2, a priori bounds on solutions (and their first derivatives) are established by means of a well-known variation of the contraction mapping principle. The authors also discuss in Theorem 3 the continuous dependence on \(u\) of the solutions of the BVP \((1_ u)\)--(2), where \((1_ u)\) is obtained from (1) by replacing function \(f\) in \(f(t,Sx_ t,x'(t),u)\), where \(u\) being a parameter.
