In this relevant paper, the author constructs a functional calculus for a pair \((A,B)\) of almost commuting selfadjoint operators, i.e. \(AB-BA\) is a trace class operator. A class \({\mathcal C}\) of functions in two real variables is constructed and a mapping \(\varphi \mapsto \varphi(A,B)\) \((\varphi \in{\mathcal C})\) is defined satisfying \[ \begin{matrix} ( \text{F} _ 1) & \text{if } \varphi(s,t)=f(x)\text{ then }\varphi(A,B)=f(A),\text{ if }\varphi(s,t)=g(t)\text{ then }\varphi(A,B)=g(B); \\ (\text{F}_ 2) & (\varphi+\psi)(A)=\varphi(A,B)+\psi(A,B) \\ ( \text{F}_ 3) & (\varphi\psi)(A,B)-\varphi(A,B)\psi(A,B)\text{ is trace class} \\ (\text{F}_ 4) & \text{trace }(\varphi(A,B)\psi(A,B)- \psi(A,B)\varphi(A,B))={1\over 2\pi i}\iint_ C \left( {\partial \varphi \over \partial x}{\partial \psi \over \partial y}-{\partial \varphi \over \partial y}{\partial\psi \over \partial x} \right)g(x,y)dxdy \end{matrix} \] where \(g\) is the Pincus principal function of the pair \((A,B)\). The class \({\mathcal C}\) lies between \(C^ 1\) and \(C^ 2\). The paper also includes a discussion on the so-called spectral shift \(\xi\) of M. G. Krein, which is a \(L^ 1( \mathbb{R})\)-function satisfying \[ \text{trace} \bigl( \varphi(A)-\varphi(B) \bigr) = \int_ \mathbb{R} \varphi' (t) \xi(t)dt \] if \(\varphi'\) is the Fourier transform of a finite measure. The techniques of the paper are based on the theory of Hankel operators.
