A domain decomposition method for the solution of a time-dependent parabolic equation is examined. The subdomain interfaces are approximated with a penalty method. The time discretization is implemented in an explicit/implicit finite difference method. The interface is approximated using an explicit DuFort-Frankel method, the interior of each subdomain using an implicit backward Euler method. The principal advantage is the direct implementation on a distributed computing system with a minimum of interprocessor communication.
