The author considers the problem of finding a domain \(D\) entering the elliptic problem \[ \text{div} ((1+\chi(D))\nabla u)=\delta(a)-\delta(b) \text{ in } \mathbb{R}^ 2,\;u(\infty)=0 \] when \(u\) is given outside a disk \(B\) containing \(D\) and a similar problem in a finite domain instead of \(\mathbb{R}^ 2\). He assumes that \(D\) is simply connected and close to a given domain \(D_ 0\). He derives a nonlinear boundary value problem for the conformal mapping in \(D\) onto the unit disk, and assuming that \(\partial D\), \(\partial D_ 0\) are analytic, proves unique solvability of this boundary problem. He is using the index of \(\nabla u\). The idea to use the index and local uniqueness for piecewise analytic \(\partial D\) belongs to \textit{H. Bellout}, \textit{A. Friedman} and \textit{V. Isakov} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 332, 271-296 (1992)]. Recently Alessandrini, Isakov, and Powell obtained local uniqueness for \(\partial D \in C^{1,\alpha}\). Global uniqueness results are available only for convex polygons \(D\). [\textit{A. Friedman} and \textit{V. Isakov}, Indiana Univ. Math. J. 38, No. 3, 563-579 (1989; Zbl 0703.35165)]. This problem is fundamental in geophysics, medicine, and defects detection.
