Let the function \(f(z)\) be holomorphic in the unit disk \(\Delta=\{z:| z|<1\}\). The Schwarz lemma asserts that if \(| f(z)|\leq 1\) for every \(z\) in \(\Delta\) and \(f(0)=0\), then \(| f(z)|\leq| z|\}\) for every \(z\) in \(\Delta\). Let \(E_ n(z_ 1,z_ 2)\) be the non-Euclidean (hyperbolic) distance between points in \(\Delta\). Pick's generalization of the Schwarz Lemma states the following. If \(| f(z)|\leq 1\) for every \(z\) in \(\Delta\), then \(E_ n\bigl(f(z_ 1,f(z_ 2)\bigr)\leq E_ n(z_ 1,z_ 2)\) for every pair of points in \(\Delta\). The author uses a known generalization of the Schwarz Lemma to prove this lemma for the projectivities of the projective matrix space \(P_ 1\bigl(M_ n(\mathbb{C})\bigr)\) onto itself. This leads to a proof of Pick's theorem for these projectivities. He also considers and discusses some related results.
