The paper studies essentially two types of spectral invariants attached to an operator of say real principal type on a compact Riemannian manifold; the \(k\)-level correlation functions and the level spacing distribution. Both made their appearance in a physics context and they both describe essential asymptotic distribution properties of spectral sets of the operator under consideration. For the very special case of a Zoll sphere explicit formulas are derived for these quantities, conforming with earlier conjectures that they are determined by the Hamiltonian flow of the principal symbol of a naturally appearing pseudodifferential operator. A quite interesting potential link between these spectral invariants and geodesic fibrations of the cosphere bundle of the manifold is discussed. More generally the problem under study here belongs in the general framework of Duistermaat and Weinstein, dealing with the relationship between null bicharacteristic flows defined by real principal type pseudo-differential operators and asymptotic clustering in the spectrum.
