The Brauer tree of the principal 17-block of Janko's simple group \(J_ 3\) has been determined up to an ambiguity by \textit{W. Feit} [in Representation Theory II, Groups and Orders, Lect. Notes Math. 1178, 25- 63 (1986; Zbl 0625.20010)]. The tree contains three algebraically conjugate classical characters of degree 1920 for which Feit did not settle the question which character occurs in which place. This has been fixed by the author in the paper under review. The proof is mostly based on computer work. The three characters in question are constituents of the 14688-dimensional permutation representation. To get the exact character values on the crucial element \(9A\) the author looks at various submodules of the mod 17 representation and restricts these to \(L_ 2(19)\). To make Parker's meat-axe working he uses condensation to a cyclic subgroup of order 19 inside \(L_ 2(19)\). On the way the author has to solve the fusion question on 9-elements of \(L_ 2(17)\) and \(L_ 2(19)\) in \(J_ 3\).
