Summary: The notion of invariance under transformations (changes of coordinates) of the Cauchy mean-value expression is introduced and then used in furnishing a suitable two-variable version of a result by \textit{L. Losonczi} [Publ. Math. 57, No. 1--2, 217--230 (2000; Zbl 0964.39018)] on equality of many-variable Cauchy means. An assessment of the methods used by \textit{L. Losonczi} [Aequationes Math. 65, No. 1--2, 61--81 (2003; Zbl 1022.39023)] and Matkowski is made and an alternative way is proposed to solve the problem of representation of two-variable Cauchy means.
