The concepts of subgradient and subdifferential of a real-valued function, which usually require convexity, are extended to general non-convex functions defined on Banach spaces. For instance, if \(\eta:\,E\times{E}\to{E}\) is a fixed known mapping, then the \(\eta\)-subgradient of a function \(\phi\) defined on a real Banach space \(E\) is defined as \(f^\ast\in{E}^\ast\), such that the inequality \[ \phi(y)-\phi(x)\geq\left\langle f^\ast,\eta(x,y)\right\rangle \] holds true for every \(y\in E\). This definition leads further to the concept of \(J^\eta\)-proximal mapping of the function \(\phi\). By definition, a \(J^\eta\)-proximal mapping is single-valued. An iterative procedure of solving a variational equation involving a \(J^\eta\)-proximal mapping is proposed. Sufficient conditions for convergence of this algorithm are obtained. The authors claim that their results generalize some previously known works. However, no example is provided to support this claim or, at least, to demonstrate an application of the developed theory.
