The authors discuss the numerical solution of initial-boundary value problems with a nonlinear convection term and a linear diffusion term. For the discretization of these problems a triangulation consisting of convex polyhedra is used, where the triangulation does not necessarily fulfil the usual conforming properties from the finite element method. In the diffusion term the solution is approximated by piecewise linear, discontinuous finite element functions and in the convection term an \(L^2\) projection of the piecewise linear functions into the space of piecewise constant functions is used. An advantage of the proposed approach is that for the discretization of both terms the same triangulation is used. The main part of the paper is the theoretical analysis of the discrete problem resulting from the space semidiscretization. Corresponding error estimates are proved. In the numerical experiments the proposed method is applied to the viscous Burgers equation. The numerical results confirm the derived error estimates.
