In this interesting paper, the authors study questions related to intrinsic and spatial numerical ranges, where these concepts are defined relative to a subspace \(X \subset Y\). Analogously to the classical case, one is looking for pairs \((X,Y)\) for which for \(T \in L(X,Y)\), the intrinsic numerical range is the closed convex hull of the spatial numerical range. Section 2 contains several instances where operators can be found for which the intrinsic numerical range is not the closed convex hull of the spatial numerical range. For example, for any infinite-dimensional space, one has a super space and an operator with the above condition. In section 4 of the paper, the authors introduce the relative version of the well-known Bishop-Phelps-Bollobas theorem. They show that any uniformly smooth space has this relative property and if a pair \((X,Y)\) has this property, then the intrinsic numerical range is the closed convex hull of the spatial numerical range for all operators. Reviewer's remark: In the statement of Proposition 4.11, \(X\) should be an absolute ideal of \(Y\) and the statement of Corollary 4.13 should also read the same. Editorial remark: This is corrected in the erratum [ ibid. 326, No. 1, 748--749 (2007; Zbl 1186.46016)].
