The authors study asymptotic properties of solutions to the neutral differential equation \[ x'(t)+ \sum_{i\in I} c_i(t) x'(t-\sigma_i)= a(t) x(t)+ \sum_{j\in J} b_i j(t) x(t-\tau_j)\tag{\(*\)} \] for \(t\geq 0\) with initial condition \(x(t)= \phi(t)\), for \(\min\{-\sigma_i, -\tau_j: i\in I, j\in J\}\leq t\leq 0\), where \(I\), \(J\) are initial segments of natural numbers, \(a\), \(b_j\), \(c_i\) are continuous functions on \([0,\infty)\), the delays \(\sigma_j\), \(\tau_i\) are positive real numbers and \(\phi\) is a given differentiable function. Results are stated in terms of the solution to a characteristic equation of \((*)\). This extends earlier results by the authors obtained for delay equations and nonautonomous delay differential equations.
