Let \(\Omega\) be an open subset of \(\mathbb{R}^n\). The authors study the generalize Hardy-Littlewood maximal operators: \[ W_\sigma M_\theta h(x)= \sup\Biggl\{\Biggl[{n\over t^n} \int^t_0 r^{n-1}\Biggl({1\over|S(x,\sigma r)|} \int_{S(x,\sigma r)}|h(y)|\,dy\Biggr)^\theta dr\Biggr]^{{1\over\theta}}: 0<t<\text{dist}(x,\partial\Omega)\Biggr\} \] and \[ M_{\alpha,\theta}h(x)= \sup\Biggl\{\Biggl[{1\over (2t)^\alpha} \int^t_0 \Biggl(\int_{\partial Q(x,r)}|h(y)|\,dy\Biggr)^\theta \,dr\Biggr]^{{1\over\theta}}: Q(x,t)\subset Q_0\Biggr\}, \] where \(\theta\geq 1\), \(0<\sigma\leq 1\), \(\alpha\geq 0\), \(S(x,r)=\partial B(x,r)\), \(B(x,r)\) is the ball centered at \(x\in\Omega\) with radius \(r\), \(Q(x, r)\) is the cube centered at \(x\in\Omega\) and parallel to the coordinate axes with edge \(2r\). This article proves that \(W_\sigma M_\theta\) are bounded from \(L^p(\Omega)\) to \(L^p(\Omega)\) for all \(p> {n\over n-1+{1\over\theta}}\), which generalizes previous work by \textit{T. Iwaniec} and \textit{J. Onninen} [Math. Ann. 324, No. 2, 341--358 (2002; Zbl 1055.42011)], and shows \(M_{\alpha,\theta}\) are closely related to the cubical \(\alpha\)-dimensional outer Hausdorff measure by using the Vitali covering lemma.
