After some introductory remarks, the author defines Wall pairs, establishes necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence, then determines (unique) maximal polynomials related to the Wall pairs (of relatively prime polynomials). In Section 3, the author explores the relevance of the Euler-Wallis recurrence, and in Section 4, looks at low extremal polynomials. Section 5 is devoted to applications, including an explicit formula for the density of the periodic measure associated with the Wall pair. Section 6 exhibits examples of periodic Schur functions, and Section 7 develops a Galois theorem for Schur's algorithm (the latter being equivalent to a Wall continued fraction). Section 8 involves measures with Schur functions and Section 9 deals with entire quadratic irrationalities. The concluding Section 10 investigates periodic measures with a given essential support.
